Twin gables

Address: Doelland 3 5, 1135 AH Edam     View map »
Type: Architecture

In the DOELLAND, at numbers 3 and 5, there is an example of "twin" gables. These 17th century step gables are so called, not only because of their identical shape, but because the houses share one internal wooden framework.
The beams cross through the dividing wall.  This is made possible by the limited width of the houses. This is an early example of a semi-detached house, built to save money. At this time, it was the building materials, rather than the labour, that were expensive.
