Culture

Besides Edam’s colourful past, the city also has a lively modern culture. Throughout the year there are regular concerts and exhibitions. The oldest jazz club in the Netherlands is in Edam. The Mahogany Club is based at the Strandbad and features jazz artists from around the world.
But it is at the end of August when the whole of Edam comes together to celebrate Waterdag. The city turns into one giant flea market where Edammers sell their unwanted goods to visitors from around North Holland.  Boat races, musical bands, and local neighbourhood parties add to the festive fun.  Waterdag marks when Edam was granted city rights more than 650 years ago.
